Lost in the Cold

Snowman

Snowman’s surface was a dangerous place. The Arkonide mercenaries used search drones to keep an eye on the surface. If there was anyone in the group who was able to escape a drone on the fly, it was the teleporter. So it was his job to go outside to search.

Gucky had found the place he had seen in Julian’s mind. A piece of ice in the dreary cold. But in front of him lay only a corpse, burned beyond recognition. Gucky knelt down, looking at the remnants of the battlesuit up close. He knew this design, knew that here he had found one of Julian and Mildred’s companions. There was not enough left of the body to identify it, and the suit offered no clues as to who its owner had been.

A jet of thermal radiation had pierced the helmet and completely destroyed the head, burning the rest of the body. Not even the protective force field had been activated, so that the wearer of the combat suit had no chance. Judging by the body shapes, it had been a man—that’s all Gucky could determine.

He systematically searched the surroundings of the site. After a few minutes, he found another crooked corpse in a crevice; he had almost missed it. The Ilt approached cautiously. The body was intact and the battlesuit undamaged. Gucky leaned over to decipher the name tag.

“Klaus,” he read. So, Humpry is the burned corpse.

He examined the energy indicator. The reserve was exhausted. After the suit was no longer able to shield the wearer from the hostile environment of Snowman, he had died. Death by freezing would be a merciful death. At least, that’s what Gucky had heard. People fell asleep and simply didn’t wake up.

Definitely better than being hit in the face by a gun, he thought.

Gucky had seen enough deaths not to be overwhelmed by grief. There was little he could do for the dead man. First and foremost, it was about the living. Immediately, his considerations became pragmatic: the suit was still usable; perhaps it was even possible to replenish the energy reserves at some point.

He began to undress the body of Klaus Eberhardt. He hurried so as not to attract the attention of a search drone. The stealth mode of his battlesuit was supposed to protect him from detection, but the mousebeaver doubted that it could withstand the targeted search of the many robots.

A little later, Klaus was in front of him. Without a protective suit, the young astronaut looked even more like a sleeping man than a corpse. Gucky thought for a moment about how much time he had left, but sometimes you had to take a risk when you did something that was right. And this meant that after working for the living, one had to find the time to do something for the dead.

Gucky climbed back to the edge of the crevasse.
